How we rank offers

Every offer list on this site is ordered by price, cheapest first. No shop can buy a position in it. This page sets out the parameters that decide the order and how much each one matters, which is what Article 7(4a) of the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive asks of us.

The main parameter: price

The order is the price you would pay, converted into one currency so the figures are comparable. Nothing else moves an offer up or down. Two corrections are applied before the comparison, because without them the sort would be between numbers that do not mean the same thing:

• Currency. Amounts are converted using daily European Central Bank reference rates. Where we have no usable rate we leave the amount in the shop’s own currency and label it, rather than relabelling an unconverted number.
• VAT. Shops differ in whether they quote inclusive of VAT. Roughly two thirds of the offers we hold come from shops that quote without it, which would place them around 21% ahead of every European shop for a price nobody here actually pays. Those offers stay visible and carry a label, but only VAT-inclusive prices decide the “from” figure on a listing and the order of the comparable ones.

How old a price may be

A price we last confirmed within 72 hours is shown as current. An older one is still shown, marked with when we last saw it, and is never counted as in stock — a week-old “in stock” is a guess, not a fact.

Nothing is hidden for being old. Past 30 days a price stops being one we are willing to compare on: it no longer sets a “from” figure and no longer decides an order, because that is the number you click through on. It stays in the offer table with its date, because what a shop listed and when is a fact, and a blank page is not more honest than an old price clearly marked as one.

Price per kilogram

Where we can, we also show a price per kilogram. It uses the weight the listing itself states, because that describes what is actually being bought. When the listing does not say and we fall back to the weight in our catalogue, the figure is marked as an estimate.

What does not affect the order

• Commission. We currently earn nothing from the links to shops. If that changes, it will be disclosed here and on the links themselves, and it will still not affect the order.
• Paid placement. Nobody can pay to appear anywhere on this site at the moment. If that changes it will be a brand featured on a browse page, in its own labelled block outside the price-ordered list, and this page will say so.
• Our own preferences. We do not operate a shop and we do not favour one.

Where the prices come from

We read them from the shops’ own public product pages and feeds. How that crawler identifies itself, and how a shop operator can reach us about it, is on the bot page.
